Devan Shimoyama
Devan Shimoyama (b.1989; BFA Penn State; MFA Yale) is a Pittsburgh-based visual artist who works primarily in painting and sculpture.
Through his depictions of the queer black male form, Shimoyama investigates the politics of queer culture while navigating his own personal narratives. More recently his work has expanded to more deeply investigate fantasy, science fiction and gaming as ways to explore the ways in which we construct identities and deconstruct ideas of power.
His work is held in private and public collections nationwide, including the Rockwell Museum, Brooklyn Museum of Art, Perez Art Museum Miami and the Scantland Collection of the Columbus Museum of Art. He has had solo exhibitions at De Buck Gallery in New York City, NY, VETA Galeria in Madrid, Spain, Kunstpalais Erlangen in Erlangen, Germany, The Contemporary Art Center of Malaga, Spain, The Andy Warhol Museum in PIttsburgh, PA, and The Ulrich Museum of Art in Wichita, KS.
